Synthetic oil is basically what it sounds like. It is a lubricant that is designed for engines that is created artificially from chemical compounds. There are many different types of synthetic oil. Some of them begin with conventional oil as the base. They then rely on chemically altering it to create this synthetic oil.
Other synthetic oils use different raw materials to create the lubricant. There are a number of people who advocate for the use of synthetic oil. Many new BMWs rely synthetic oil and the manufacture recommends that over conventional or traditional oil. There are a number of reasons for this.
Reason #1: Synthetic oil are more effective at protecting engine parts during cold starts. Because of the chemical composition of synthetic oil, it has an ability to protect the BMW engine more effectively, especially during those cold starts during the winter.
Reason #2: Simple synthetic oil is thinner. The reason why it is so effective at protecting an engine better during cold starts is because it is thinner than conventional oil. When oil is thinner, it moves through engine parts much more effectively.
During cold weather, oil gets thicker and moves much more slowly as a result. It’s always better to rely on a thinner oil during colder weather. Even during the summer, a cold start can be stressful for an engine, especially if the oil doesn’t move through those components as effectively as it could or should.
Reason #3: Synthetic oil resists temperature extremes better. Within the engine there are going to be many extreme temperatures. Mostly, when the engine is running at optimal performance levels, the temperature is going to be significant. Relying on an oil that can resist these extreme temperatures better will help to protect the engine more.
When you go to bring your BMW in to an auto service center for oil change, if the technician is recommending synthetic oil or the manufacturer has done that, it’s best to heed their advice. Synthetic oil is becoming the preferred option among BMW owners throughout Canada.
