In today’s environment, though, you still want to be conscious about the amount of fuel you consume. Maybe you’re not so much concerned about the environment but don’t want to keep throwing money away. The price of gas continues to rise every year, on average. Recently it has dropped, that that won’t hold for long.
Here are four gas saving tips that can help you maximize fuel efficiency and spend less time at the pump.
Gas Saving Tip #1: Choose the right fuel.
You want to make sure you’re putting the right octane fuel in your particular BMW. High-performance engines generally require higher octane levels. If your BMW calls for 93 octane, make sure you put 93 octane in it. Putting 91, 89, or even 87 is going to cause problems.
You may find some gas stations that offer 94 octane and that can be okay, but you’re not going to get any benefit from that.
Gas Saving Tip #2: Ease off on the accelerator.
When you’re starting from a light or stop sign, avoid the temptation to crank down the accelerator and ‘gun it.’ Hard acceleration burns a lot more fuel.
Gas Saving Tip #3: Avoid idling too long.
If you’re going to be sitting for a while waiting for somebody who has to run into the store or your spouse is taking too long to get out from the house, turn the engine off. Idling still burns quite a bit of fuel, even though a lot of people incorrectly assume it doesn’t do anything.
It’s best to simply shut the engine off and wait until you’re just about ready to go.
Gas Saving Tip #4: Let your BMW warm up.
When it’s cold outside, you want to make sure your BMW gets an opportunity to warm up before you put it in drive. A warm engine is going to be much more fuel efficient than a cold one. It’s also going to be better for your transmission, engine, and other components if they get an opportunity to warm up.
This last tip is especially important when temperatures are extreme.
