The moment that you purchase a BMW, you are probably thinking about all of the things that you can, and should, do in order to keep it looking like new. You get your soft terry cloth and wipe down any blemishes, including fingerprints when your friends and family gawk over the incredible machine in your driveway.
That’s not going to help keep your BMW running well throughout its life. You need to make sure that you provide the right tune-up service for it. It’s one of the reasons why you would have a general maintenance program, including scheduled maintenance and oil changes through the dealership.
There are also things that you do to help improve the performance of your fine driving machine. You can either do some of these yourself or bring your BMW to a qualified, certified service center to have them done. Relying on more than just your stock, standard dealer service shop will help to ensure that your car gets the best care from start to those final miles.
1. Check the spark plugs. Even though you don’t need to replace the spark plugs all that often, that doesn’t mean you should just ignore them. Take them out every few thousand miles and inspect them. You should also clean them.
Checking them will allow you to keep tabs on any potential problems including buildup in the cylinders that could provide trouble down the road.
2. Inspect the wires. Throughout your BMW, you will notice many harnesses and wires, including spark plug wires. These are generally set so that they will be safe, but on occasion, they can become jarred loose and melt on the hot engine components.
Check the wires to ensure that they are still intact and are not at risk of burning. You’ll also want to check them to ensure that mice or other rodents aren’t nesting among them during the cold winter months.
3. Clean out the air filter regularly. Even though your owner’s manual might not require you to replace the air filter that often, it should be replaced every 32,000 kilometers, but it should be cleaned every 10,000 kilometers.
This is even more important if you live and drive in downtown Toronto or drive along a dusty road. The more dust or pollution that gets in the air, the more it will get trapped in the filter. Cleaning the filter will help to keep your engine’s air clean.
