You shopped around for quite a while, responded to a number of ads you noticed online or in the local newspaper, and finally chose the BMW you always wanted. Whether it was a Z-3, a 525i, or some other model, you’re happy with your purchase, but there are a few things you should do with this used vehicle.
1. Change the oil.
Even though you shouldn’t really do it yourself, it’s a good idea to bring your BMW to an authorized service center to have the oil changed, the transmission fluid checked, and possibly even have the spark plugs changed. Even though the seller stipulated that the oil had recently been changed, that’s not necessarily the truth. Don’t take any chances. Have that done right away.
2. Have it inspected for safety.
It may cost a bit of money, but you should have your BMW inspected thoroughly by an experienced technician. They can go from top to bottom checking every single component, suspension and handling, the engine, the exhaust, and everything else. Any issues they find can be addressed now rather than waiting until more damage occurs.
3. Make sure you have the right insurance.
Maybe you added this vehicle to your insurance, which is a requirement by law, but you might not have the exact coverage you need for this one, especially if your current policy was covering a different vehicle. Just go over your insurance policy with your agent to ensure that you are properly covered.
4. Start a log.
Keeping a maintenance log is a great way to help you determine when the next oil change should occur, what work was done, and what else may be necessary in the near future.
5. Make it your own.
You may prefer the simplicity of no extraneous ground effects or other features on your BMW. If that’s the case, that’s great. If you prefer some little mementos or trinkets that make the vehicle your own, now is the time to look into those.
Getting a used BMW can be exciting, especially if you’ve never owned one before. When you buy used, follow these five tips first and that will maximize your enjoyment well into the future.
