This is a really good question. This is actually a question we hear a lot. Many people wonder if it’s really important to flush the radiator twice a year. They understand there is a benefit to flushing it once a year, especially right before the winter season hits, but is it really necessary to do that heading into spring?
Yes, it is.
First and foremost, even though antifreeze and coolant are essentially the same thing, they perform completely different tasks. Like oil, the antifreeze in your BMW engine can begin to break down and become a lot less effective.
During the spring months, and then into summer, as the temperature increases, your BMWs performance can be compromised by ineffective coolant. You may not notice much change in the temperature gauge on your dashboard, but if there’s a problem, if there’s a leak and you don’t keep on top of it, you could end up on the side of the road broken down with some serious engine problems.
Like changing your oil, when you flush your radiator, you help to wash out any contaminants that could potentially get carried into the engine, causing some serious damage to the internal components. You also keep an eye on the fluid levels and if you notice it has dropped, it could be due to a rock that was thrown under your car and struck a hose during the winter driving season. You might not recognize that otherwise.
It’s important to keep on top of general maintenance for your BMW and any other vehicle you own. Replacing the oil and flushing the antifreeze and pouring in new coolant is a simple step that doesn’t take a lot of time and really isn’t that costly, especially when you consider how much you value your BMW and how much you want to protect it.
